Final Score: Braves 4, Mets 3 — We believe in comebacks (that fall short)

The Mets scored three runs in a frantic comeback attempt in the ninth inning but came up short against the Braves.

The Mets turned a lifeless game into an exciting one when they scored three runs in the ninth inning against Braves flamethrowers Jordan Walden and Craig Kimbrel. Unfortunately, the comeback attempt died when Kimbrel struck out Ruben Tejada with runners on first and third to end it. The Mets' runs came on a two-run single by Juan Lagares and an RBI single by Travis d'Arnaud.

Mets starter Zack Wheeler didn't walk anyone tonight -- hooray! -- but did give up four runs in just five innings of work -- boooo! He lost an 11-pitch battle with the first batter he faced, Jason Heyward, when the Braves' leadoff man hit a home run to right field. Wheeler was then touched up for three runs on five hits in the fifth inning and left for a pinch hitter in the top of the sixth inning.

The Mets' offense managed just three baserunners against a dominant Ervin Santana, who needed only 88 pitches to make it through eight easy innings.
