Mets Daily Farm Report, April 9, 2014: Eric Campbell Loads the Spaceship with Rocket Fuel

Triple-A - Las Vegas 51's (5-1)_______________________________________

SACRAMENTO 6, LAS VEGAS 7 (Box)

Before the game began, I raised my eyebrows: why was Cesar Puello batting eighth? But, anyway...Rafael Montero needed 92 pitches to make it through five innings, but part of that was because he struck out nine batters- two in the 1^st, one in the 2^nd, three in the 3^rd, and three in the 5^th. Seven of those strikeouts were swing-and-misses, while the other two were called looking. Montero cruised through the first two innings, and was even given a three-run lead in the bottom of the 2^nd before running into trouble in the 3^rd. After sandwiching a walk (that probably should have been called a strikeout) between strikeouts, he allowed a slow roller that Craig Gentry beat out for a single and a pair of doubles that plated three runs. That was his only real hiccup on the night, and because Wilmer Flores drove in a pair in the bottom of the 5^th, he left the game with the lead. Miguel Socolovich promptly gave up a sac fly run in the 6^th, and Erik Goeddel allowed a run to cross the plate in the 7^th on a wild pitch, tying the game and denying Montero the chance to get the ‘W'. In the bottom of the 7^th, the 51s broke ahead on an Eric Campbell two-run homer. Danny Muno's walk, which made the homer of the two-run variety, really came back as beneficial, as Giancarlo Alvarado allowed a run in the top of the 8^th. Jeff Walters pitched a clean 9^th to save his first game of the year.

Double-A - Binghamton Mets (3-2)_____________________________________

ERIE 2, BINGHAMTON 7 (Box)

The SeaWolves burst out of the gate quickly, plating a pair of runs on an Aaron Westlake home run in the 1^st inning, but those two runs would be all Erie would be able to muster against Greg Peavey and the Binghamton bullpen. The B-Mets quickly put up a two spot of their own in the bottom of the 2^nd, bring the game back to a tie. The B-Mets offense continued slamming SeaWolves pitching, pounding out two more runs in the 4^th, and a run in the 5^th (Wilfredo Tovar RBI triple), 6^th (good baserunning by Jayce Boyd after shortstop Eugenio Suarez committed an error) and 7^th (a pair of doubles by Travis Taijeron and Darrell Ceciliani), turning the game into a route.

ST. LUCIE 0, JUPITER 11 (Box)

There really aren't any positives to take out of St. Lucie's 11-0 schlubbing at the hands of the Jupiter Hammerheads last night. The best thing that can be said is that Aderlin Rodriguez finally got his first hit of the 2014 season (and then another for good measure), bringing his average up to .105 for the season. St. Lucie was in the game for the first six innings, as a 2-0 deficit can be erased with one potential swing. Things got out of hand in the 7^th when Beck Wheeler replaced Luis Cessa- who had otherwise pitched well enough- gave up three runs. Julian Hilario replaced Wheeler to pitch the 8^th, and the wheels completely fell off. The Dominican right-hander gave up seven hits, allowed six runs, and was only able to record two outs before being replaced by Paul Sewald to end the inning.

GAME ONE

AUGUSTA 5, SAVANNAH 6 / 7 Innings (Box)

Franklin Pierce College alum Kevin McGowan looked good early, tossing two scoreless innings to start the game- including striking out the side in the 1^st- but ran into a little trouble in the 3^rd, when three runs crossed the plate. The Savannah offense spotted McGowan, when Jared King laced a bases loaded line drive into right that plated two runs- Victor Cruzado, the tying run, was thrown out at home trying to score. McGowan had another hiccup in the 5^th, allowing two more runs to score, but the Gnats scored two of their own to keep the game close. Dawrin Frias closed out the later innings, shutting down the GreenJackets, leaving it up to the offense to pull out a win- and they delivered. In the bottom of the 6^th, Stephan Sabol cracked a home run over the left field wall to tie the game. In the bottom of the 7^th, Patrick Biondi reached on an error, Gavin Cecchini walked, and Cruzado was walked intentionally, loading the bases. L.J. Mazzilli stepped up to the plate and worked a bases loaded walk-off walk to seal a Savannah victory in game one.

L.J. Mazzilli kept up his momentum from Game One, driving in a pair of runs on a line drive to center in the 1^st inning. Dario Alvarez held Augusta in check in his four innings of work. The Dominican held the GreenJackets scoreless, scattering three hits and two walks, while striking out five. In the 4^th, his last inning of work, he almost allowed a run, as he walked a man and then gave up a double, but left fielder Jared King successfully got the ball to Jeff Glenn in time to tag out the lead runner. Augusta finally got on the board in the 6^th, scratching out a run, but it was too little, too late, as the Sand Gnats swept the doubleheader.
