The Mets are swept by the Nationals after another cover-your-eyes performance by the New York bullpen.
The Mets hopefully won't be this bad all season long, but right now they are pretty dreadful. Once again, the home team got off to a good start but slowly faded as the game wore on.
A pair of runs crossed the plate in the bottom of the first, as Curtis Granderson recorded his first hit of the season with an RBI double. Juan Lagares followed with a sac fly to put the Metsies up 2-0. However, Nationals surprise starter Tanner Roark would settle down afterwards, finishing with five strikeouts and three walks in six innings.
Zack Wheeler also pitched pretty well, but he was hit up for a massive solo shot by Ryan Zimmerman in the top of the second. That was one of four Zimmerman hits on the day, and one of six times that Wheeler would allow the leadoff runner to reach base. Considering that trend, it's a minor miracle that he allowed just three runs in his six innings.
RBI singles by Denard Span and Jayson Werth gave Washington the lead in the fifth, and things got out of hand when the Mets bullpen took over. Jeurys Famila and Scott Rice combined to give up four runs (three earned) in the seventh, and Carlos Torres walked in a run in the eighth to cap the scoring.
Next up, the Mets play the Reds at Citi Field on Friday night at 7:10 p.m. Jenrry Mejia is scheduled to make his 2014 debut against Mike Leake.
