Mets place Chris Young on disabled list, keep Wilmer Flores on roster for now

Young is out with a quad strain, while Flores is expected to stay with the team until Sunday.

The Mets' surplus of outfielders is already coming in handy. That's the silver lining to today's news that free agent acquisition Chris Young is hitting the disabled list after playing just one inning in Wednesday night's game.

Young originally suffered a right quadriceps strain last weekend during New York's two-game exhibition series versus the Blue Jays in Montreal. The injury was serious enough to hold Young out of the season opener against the Nationals, but he was able to make his Mets debut on Wednesday night in the second game of the season.

Early on, though, Young appeared to aggravate the injury while chasing a foul ball. With the Mets placing him on the disabled list, it opens up a roster spot for Wilmer Flores to stay with the team for a bit longer. Flores was originally supposed to go back to Triple-A Las Vegas today when Daniel Murphy was activated off of the paternity leave list. Instead, Flores is scheduled to remain with the big league club until Jon Niese comes off the disabled list to make his first start of the season on Sunday versus the Reds. That's the plan for now, at least.
