A 40-man roster move was necessary to add Farnsworth.

The Mets have officially added Kyle Farnsworth to their 40-man and active rosters. In order to make room for him on the 40-man, the team outrighted 28-year-old relief pitcher Ryan Reid.

Farnsworth spent most of last season with the Tampa Bay Rays before he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates late in the season. In total, he had a 4.70 and 4.14 FIP, though he fared better as a Pirate than as a Ray. He'll join a Mets bullpen that also includes Jose Valverde, Jeurys Familia, Scott Rice, Carlos Torres, Gonzalez Germen, and John Lannan.

The Mets acquired Reed in mid-December as a waiver claim from the Pirates. He has just seven major league appearances to his name and posted a 1.64 ERA in them with Pittsburgh last year. In 59.1 innings of work with the Pirates' Triple-A affiliate last year, he had a 2.73 ERA. Before 2013, he spent seven years in the Rays' organization. He is now subject to waivers once again, but if he clears, he'll remain with the Mets as a minor league player.
