The Mets' bullpen blew a couple of late leads, and the team lost its season opener.

The Mets’ bullpen blew a late lead, and the team lost to the Nationals to begin the 2014 season. New York got on the board first with a three-run home run by Andrew Brown, but the Nationals answered with a two-run bomb from Adam LaRoche in the top of the second inning.

Eric Young Jr. drove in a run in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly, but Stephen Strasburg settled in from there. Gee did, too, and pitched into the seventh inning before getting into trouble. He allowed a run in the seventh before giving way to the Carlos Torres and Scott Rice, each of whom walked the only batter he faced on four pitches. The second walk forced in a run to tie the game.

Jose Valverde came in next and got a strikeout to leave the bases loaded and came back out for a scoreless eighth. Juan Lagares led off the eighth inning with a solo home run to put the Mets ahead by a run, but the lead was only temporary, as Bobby Parnell allowed Washington to tie the game in the top of the ninth.

Jeurys Familia came out for the tenth inning and fell victim to a pair of soft singles and a Travis d’Arnaud passed ball. One strikeout later, he gave up a sacrifice fly, and Washington had taken its first lead of the day. Terry Collins turned to John Lannan, who walked Adam LaRoche and served up a three-run home run to Anthony Rendon.

With two outs in the bottom of the tenth inning, David Wright hit a two-run home run, but Curtis Granderson struck out to end it immediately thereafter. It was not the ideal way to begin a baseball season.
