Mets Rumors: Mets considering signing Bobby Abreu to minor league deal

The 40-year-old spent spring training with the Phillies but did not make their Opening Day roster.

The Mets are considering signing 40-year-old outfielder Bobby Abreu to a minor league deal, according to Jon Heyman. The left-handed hitter last played in Major League Baseball in 2012. He signed a minor league deal with the Phillies over this offseason and hit .244/.404/.466 in 52 spring training plate appearances with them, but he did not make their roster and was released.

Abreu spent the bulk of his career with the Phillies but also played for the Astros, Yankees, Angels, and Dodgers. He is a career .292/.396/.477 hitter, but his power was in steep decline over the last couple years he played in the big leagues. Strictly as depth, signing him wouldn't be a terrible idea, but it's hard to see him as much of an upgrade over anyone else who might otherwise be on the Mets' major league roster.
