The 24-year-old's pitching arm was hit by a comeback ground ball.
In a start that was going well against the Blue Jays in Montreal, Jenrry Mejia's right forearm was hit by a comeback ground ball in the fifth inning. Manager Terry Collins and trainer Ray Ramirez visited the mound, and Mejia was removed from the game.
The initial word from the Mets is that Mejia has just a contusion, though he'll undergo X-rays to make sure all is well. Even if that comes back negative, it's not impossible that a minor injury would set Mejia back at the beginning of the season. The Mets had hinted that Mejia would get a start on Friday, while Daisuke Matsuzaka would be in line for a start if Jon Niese is unable to return on April 6.
The Mets expect results on Mejia tomorrow, at which time they'll probably have a better idea of what they will do with their rotation over the first week of the season. Should Mejia miss time and Niese not be ready, Terry Collins suggested that John Lannan could be an option as a fill-in starter.
