The Miami Marlins defeated the New York Mets in extra innings in today's outing, with Jose Fernandez pitching 3 1/3 innings and Mark Canha and Brent Keys delivering for the Fish late.
The Miami Marlins picked up another win today, this time beating the New York Mets in 10 innings thanks to a three-run tenth inning. The team started Jose Fernandez in his second start of the Spring Training season, opposite the Mets' Dillon Gee. Fernandez put up a strong outing for the Fish, going 3 1/3 innings and pitching shutout baseball against a Mets lineup that included a few of the team's probable big-league starters come Opening Day, including free agent signings Chris Young and Curtis Granderson. Fernandez gave up just two hits and struck out two in his 3 1/3 innings of work, eventually ceding the mound to an array of pitchers for the Fish.
The Marlins jumped out to an early lead thanks to an RBI double by Reed Johnson. The Fish caught a break when Mets catcher Anthony Recker could not find the handle on a center field throw and was unable to tag Jeff Mathis on tag-up attempt at home plate, giving Miami a 2-0 lead.
The Marlins conceded that lead with a poor performance from reliever Michael Brady. Brady entered the ninth with the Marlins up 2-1, but he promptly allowed two hard-hit singles followed by a sacrifice fly that brought home the tying run. He did manage to find the final two outs, but the lead was blown and the Marlins and Mets went to extras.
The game would not last too much longer, because the Fish put on a three-run tenth inning to seal the deal. Austin Nola and Kyle Jensen led the inning off with back-to-back walks, and Mark Canha put the Fish back in the lead with a double deep to center field and over the head of Matt den Dekker. One batter later, top prospectBrent Keys doubled down the right field line and plated the two runners, giving Miami the eventual win.
Miami will be back at home at Roger Dean Stadium to face the Boston Red Sox tomorrow.
