The Diamondbacks have an extra shortstop or two and the Mets are looking, but so far they haven't been able to find common ground.
The Diamondbacks have been looking all over for a place to send one of their young shortstops and the Mets have been looking all over for a young shortstop, but that doesn't mean the two clubs are going to be able to work out a trade, according to Marc Carig of Newsday. The Diamondbacks are reportedly seeking a young catcher in return and beyond Travis d'Arnaud, the Mets don't have much to offer.
The Diamondbacks entered spring training this year with three shortstops of the future; Didi Gregorius, Chris Owings, and Nick Ahmend and quality defender and useful backup Cliff Pennington also calls Chase Field home. Even when you factor in the bust potential of any young player, having that much talent stacked at one position screams for a trade. That said, they likely aren't in a rush to make a move and will be able to wait for the right offer.

The rumor that the Diamondbacks are asking for a young catcher could be an indication of frustration with Miguel Montero who struggled significantly in 2013 but remains under contract for $50 million over the next four years.
Mets fans, however, will likely be frustrated by the specificity of that asking price given that they are in dire need of a long term solution at shortstop and that they have little catching depth in the minors. The failure of these negotiations are also likely the next chapter in a long, tumultuous courtship between Stephen Drew and the Mets, who seem to be destined for one another, even if both sides continue to deny it.
