Harvey Day went swimmingly through seven plus innings but things caved in during the eighth as the Mets fell to the Nationals 6-4 tonight. Matt Harvey was once again dominant, allowing just a run on three hits while striking eleven over seven innings and the Mets' offense put up four runs to give him a 4-1 cushion headed into the eighth.
That's where the trouble began, though. David Aardsma came on to start the inning in relief of Harvey and allowed a leadoff hit before easily retiring the next two batters. With Denard Span stepping to the plate, Terry Collins curiously lifted Aardsma from the game in favor of Josh Edgin, who immediately allowed a double to Span. Brandon Lyon came on next and after walking Anthony Rendon to load the bases, allowed Ryan Zimmerman to clear them with a double in the left center field gap. Headed into the ninth tied at four apiece, Bobby Parnell didn't have his best stuff and he allowed the Nationals to score two runs and the Mets went silently in the bottom half of the ninth.
