The 25-year-old had been a starting pitcher since his professional debut.

Right-handed pitcher Erik Goeddel will move to the bullpen this year, whether he's with the Mets or in the minors, according to ESPN New York. It's not a surprising move, and ultimately it could benefit both the player and the team.

The Mets added Goeddel to their 40-man roster earlier this winter, which protected him from the Rule 5 draft and gives him a leg up on players not on the 40 when it comes to making the team's 25-man roster this season. He spent last year with Double-A Binghamton and posted a 4.37 ERA and 4.15 FIP over 134 innings spanning 25 starts.

Our own Jeffrey Paternostro saw Goeddel a few times last year. Here's some of what he had to say:

Goeddel's stuff is not a great fit for Vegas, especially if he's starting. I'd like to see them move him to the pen to see if he sticks at the upper end of his velocity there. It would also allow him to focus on being a fastball/curve guy. However, the Mets under Alderson have generally been in no hurry to move their mior league starters to the bullpen.
