The Mets' farm system comes out looking good once again.
It's been a good winter for the Mets' farm system, and the trend continues tonight, as Baseball America included four Mets' in its top 100 prospects list: right-handed pitcher Noah Syndergaard (16), catcher Travis d'Arnaud (38), right-handed pitcher Rafael Montero (68), and first baseman Dominic Smith (92).
Syndergaard is, of course, the Mets' top pitching prospect now that Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler have graduated. Baseball America writes:
"Syndergaard’s secondary pitches flash above-average if not better. More consistent power on his curveball would complement his premium fastball and help him make a midseason jump to New York."
d'Arnaud made his major league debut late last year, and though he struggled at the plate, he's still highly rated:
"Stay. On. The. Field. His first injury-free season since 2011 would help make d’Arnaud a Rookie of the Year contender."
Montero has risen up the Mets' minor league ranks quickly and seems ready for his big league debut soon:
"Few minor leaguers throw more consistent quality strikes than the smallish Montero, and as long as he maintains his command he should get his first shot in New York in 2014."
Smith won't turn 19 until June, but he's gotten plenty of praise this winter:
"Smith might make his full-season debut at low Class A Savannah, a decided pitcher’s park. He’ll have to focus on his hitting approach and avoid getting down if the results aren’t there this season."
"The Mets have a good farm system" guarantees nothing, but it's a lot better than "the Mets have an awful farm system."
