The veteran's minor league deal includes incentives.
The Mets' deal with veteran relief pitcher Kyle Farnsworth could be up to $2.5 million in total, according to Jon Heyman. If the soon-to-be 38-year-old makes the Mets' major league roster, he'll earn $1 million. He could earn up to an additional $1.5 million in incentives.
It's hard to imagine the Mets won't carry Farnsworth on their Opening Day roster, barring a terrible spring training. While he struggled to the tune of a 4.70 ERA last year, Farnsworth looked much better in nine games with the Pirates late in the season than he did in thirty-nine games with the Rays. That's a really small sample, of course, but perhaps the Mets were encouraged by his strong finish.
The signing is reminiscent of the Mets' signing of LaTroy Hawkins last winter. After making the team's Opening Day roster, Hawkins went on to have a good year and wound up signing a one-year, $2.5 million deal with the Rockies for 2014.
