The Mets will not go after the veteran relief pitcher.

The Mets are not likely to pursue right-handed reliever Fernando Rodney, according to Jon Heyman. This news comes on the heels of reports that the Mets have lost out on Grant Balfour, despite offering him a sizable contract.

The 36-year-old Rodney has been in the majors since 2002 and has played for the Tigers, Angels, and Rays. In 2012, Rodney's career went through a resurgence, as he posted a 0.60 ERA, which resulted in him winning the AL Comeback Player of the Year and Delivery Man of the Year awards. In 2013, Rodney regressed, but he produced a solid 3.38 ERA while and a career-high 11.07 strikeouts per nine innings. There are concerns about Rodney, however, as his home run to fly ball ratio increased sharply, as did his walk percentage.

Earlier today, Chris McShane suggested that Rodney's age and desire for a large contract likely wouldn't make him a fit for the Mets. With the Mets having filled several slots already, the club could look to more in-house options.
