Though the Mets would lose the game in the bottom of the ninth, their fans — and their announcer— rejoiced in the collective defensive ineptitude of White Sox second baseman Gordon Beckham and third baseman Conor Gillaspie. Gillaspie called for Daniel Murphy's can-of-corn pop-up that would have ended the game, but Beckham had ideas of his own. Mainly, his idea was to trip and take a tumble into Gillaspie's legs, allowing the pop-up to land safely and David Wright to score the tying run.
