Our old friend Omar is back in the fold. No, not that Omar. Yes, *that* Omar.
With basically nothing in the way of big-league-ready talent to support presumed Opening day shortstop Ruben Tejada, the Mets have brought back old friend Omar Quintanilla on a minor league deal a month and a half after non-tendering him and about a year after last signing him to a minor league deal.
Believe it or not, Quintanilla was a first-round pick by the Oakland A's back in 2003, though with modest defensive skills and a major league batting line of .221/.288/.296 it's hard to imagine what Billy Beane saw in the shortstop, who went four spots ahead of outfielder Adam Jones.
Both FanGraphs' fWAR and Baseball-Reference's bWAR considered Quintanilla a worse-than-replacement player last year with the Mets, which makes his 359 plate appearances particularly disheartening. If he gets half that much playing time in 2014, something has gone horribly, horribly wrong for the Mets.
