Mets Rumors: Freddy Garcia's agents, Mets have spoken

The Mets have spoken to right-handed pitcher Freddy Garcia's agents, as the team may still be looking for a fifth starter.

The Mets front office may be looking to bring in some competition for Jenrry Mejia, as they have reportedly spoken to right-handed pitcher Freddy Garcia's agents. Garcia had spent his entire 15-year MLB career as a starting pitcher until last year, when he was asked to perform some bullpen duties. The Mets could be looking at him in that role, as well, as the team lost a few bullpen arms to free agency. Garcia once signed with the Mets, in 2009, but after two bad starts with Triple-A Buffalo, he was released.

Garcia started 13 games in 2013 and appeared in  four more as a relief pitcher, posting a 4.37 ERA, 5.15 strikeouts per nine, and 1.90 walks per nine. Garcia was particularly susceptible to the home run, having allowed home runs at a rate of 2.02 per nine innings, more than double his career rate.

Garcia would be an interesting addition to the team because he would likely only be needed for half of the season due to Noah Syndergaard's presumable mid-season call-up.
