Mets Rumors: Sandy Alderson gives update at team holiday party

Talking about work at the holiday party is so, so lame. At least "work" is baseball in this situation.

The MLB Winter Meetings may be over, but there is still work to be done this offseason for Sandy Alderson and the Mets. The GM offered some updates on said work at the team's holiday party, according to multiple beat reporters.

Unsurprisingly, the Mets are not likely to make another major starting pitching acquisition after the Bartolo Colon signing. However, the team may bring in someone on a minor league deal to compete with Jenrry Mejia and others for the fifth spot in the rotation. That also means that the Mets probably aren't going to pursue Japanese import Masahiro Tanaka, even though the new posting rules enforce a maximum posting fee of $20 million.

Although New York has appeared slightly desperate to get rid off Ike Davis in recent weeks, Alderson told reporters that the team is willing to wait on a deal if teams aren't offering anything desirable.

That desirable something could be a shortstop. The Mets are reportedly talking to "two or three" teams regarding a swap that could upgrade the position of need in exchange for one of New York's first basemen.
